The Clansman Thomas Dixon 9781463608934 Books Reviews

This book is valuable reading for those who would like to understand the Genesis for racial animosities and problems that still occur in both the North and the South today. It also provides a familiarity with the actions and motives of the true historical Ku Klux Klan in contrast to the misguided bigots who preach racial hatred under the guise of the neo Ku Klux Klan of today. Film and theatre students will find this book interesting as the basis for D.W. Griffith's acclaimed film classic "Birth of a Nation". If possible locate an unabridged copy of this classic book.
Whether one agrees or disagrees with Dixon's ideology, this is nonetheless a gripping and pwerful novel which formed the basis for THE BIRTH OF A NATION. Dixon was the academic and literary equal of Upton Sinclair and Frank Norris.
Very intriguing book. This book ,even though might be hated by some, is a piece of history that is great to have.
I had seen the book a couple of times in antique stores but paid little attention to it. Even now I'm not sure why I bought it through . But, I'm sure glad I did.

I've never had much interest in nineteenth century American history, the last time I read anything much about the period was as an undergraduate, and heck that might have been in freshman American history. Having completed the book I now have a great interest in the Reconstruction and intend to read much more about it, all because of Dixon's book.

In the preface Dixon states that the background of the novel is based on historical fact. In this regard he made references to things like the Cotton Tax. I had never heard of that. Was there such a thing? He said through one of his characters that it took $67,000,000 out of the South. Then there were plans to confiscate white southern landholdings. Was that possible? Dixon has southerners chained and imprisoned for little reason and denied access to legal counsel and trial. Did that happen? White people jailed if they did not salute black army officers. Did that? then there's an indictment of rich Massachusetts families getting rich from the slave trade. Huh? And, of course, there is plenty in the book about northerners just plain plundering property after the war.

There is also a fair amount of curious detail in Dixon's book that I found interesting. An example is the best hiding place for tha Ku Klux Klan robes, the weight of a robe, and the time needed to don the garments.

The story itself is sort of a Shakespearean love story where a southern boy falls for a northern girl, who happens to be the villain's daughter, you know, that Romeo and Juliet thing. The story does have a happier ending though with no suicides.

Now here is the interesting thing. The premise that the Reconstruction had a deliterious effect on the South had been generally accepted through at least 1960. This was the Dunning school of thought that came primarily from historians at Columbia University. It must be admitted though that southern historians certainly felt the same with the University of Georgia being a center for "we were done wrong" thinking.

Revisionists started writing just the opposite by the mid-1960's. Now the main proponent of what a good thing Reconstuction was is a fellow named Eric Foner. He's an interesting guy. His father fought for the commies in the Spanish Civil War, his uncle is a self admitted "marxist labor historian," and Foner himself taught at Moscow State University and he decried the breakup of the former Soviet Union. With regard to Reconstruction, however, Foner has a large following. To him and his followers, the South needed to be made over.

Now here I thought there was nothing interesting in nineteenth century American history. Wow! I've got a lot of reading to do. Really, what happened?

I'm glad I read Dixon's book just like I'm glad I read (most) of the Versailles Treaty. Going to the source sometimes tell us what the real story is. Any reading of the treaty, for example, will explain the origin of the Second World War, an observation made by Keynes. And, if what Dixon wrote is true, it certainly explains why the South was solidly Democrat for almost 100 years. But that's the fun of history. Dunning or Foner? And, of course, thank you to Dixon for whetting my appetite. You will find the book interesting regardless of current political views. A must read.
Just what I was looking for and expected.
Very Good, highly recommend.
