OH. MY. LORDYNESS. This book was just AMAZING! I haven't read such a book in AGES now! The characters 'blossomed', yes, blossomed, for there is no other way to put it. It was fast paced in relevance with the first book, and it definitely kept my interest going, even when I wasn't reading it, my mind couldn't help but continue going over the wonderful-amazingness I've read, and attempting to figure out what would occur next. (Sure enough, I never guessed things right, which in this case is odd because lately that's all I've been doing with books and grown tired of it.) Anyway, my review isn't much of a review, just disorganised rambling, I wish I had more of a poetic way of attempting to describe this book, but alas, this is why I'm not a writer.First, let me explain that from the beginning I was an Armand/Eleanore fan, though I didn't dislike Jesse at all, but I thought, maybe having a love triangle would make it tedious, yet Abé pulled it off nicely. For those who decided to continue reading my overly obsessed ramblings, and those who missed the first installment, Jesse was fated to become a star, and I don't mean the type people can make money off of, he's still very much present in this book and in fact, has a lot to answer for in regards to the destiny of both Armand and Eleanore.
If the characters were a bit flat in the beginning (of the first installment), or if any of you readers found it tiresome how it took a while for them to settle in as actual characters, this book expands their personalities more, and makes you care for them both. Eleanore wasn't the typical teenager heroine, no, she was witty, she was a subtle fighter, she didn't let anything bring her down, she loved and care for passionately, her mind and actions made sense, and she was always eating like there wouldn't be another tomorrow XD. SHE HAD AN ACTUAL PERSONALITY. Unlike some typical mainstream novels that go by some sort of guide on how to make their heroines act. Anywho, I felt that she definitely grew a spine and didn't lie to herself.
Now Armand on the other hand, he definitely resembled some character from Abé's previous works (and as a devoted fan, I have consumed all of her books, yes CONSUMED), their alpha traits, their clingy personalities, their vulnerability and fear of being alone forever, yup, I've read those, but for some reason Abé managed to make Armand change from her own previous heroes in the fact that he actually is aware that sometimes he has to leave the mantle of control to someone else, and he accepts the fact that he doesn't have much powers at first, and must rely heavily on Eleanore to take them to rescue his brother Aubrey. Also, I just love the way he shows he cares deeply for Eleanore, she seems rather distant at first, but his subtle persistence in making her feel SOMETHING for him draws them both together, and of course, me as the reader <3
The setting is in a new place!!!! Oh goodness, I was getting tired of all the places being in USA and England, this time we are treated with new places in central Europe like France, Belgium, and Germany, during the first World War (FINALLY! A new time era as well!) all in the wonderful, GORGEOUS prose of Abe! As I finished this book, I felt that it might be the last one, but by re-reading the last pages I realised this super author might have another book up her sleeve. Honestly, I cannot get enough of her works of art! I re-read most of her books when I want to read places that come to life in my mind as clear and unique as her characters perceive it. My favourite one by Abé has to be The Secret Swan, for it's similar to this book, in the way that it may be slow at first, but gradually gains pace as we come to realise the extent the hero loves the heroine. And this is very much apparent in this book. Please Ms. Abé, don't stop writing stories like this EVER!

The Deepest Night Sweetest Dark Shana Abe Books Reviews
I have always been a big fan of Shana Abe's. This new series from her is fabulous. I read it on a recent vacation and couldn't put it down. Can't wait for book 3!
This continuation of the tale that began in The Sweetest Dark is where the adventure takes off as Lora and Armand must fly into Prussia on a dragon rescue mission. The engaging characters grow closer as they are constantly in harm's way. Abe's beautiful writing style makes it all a pleasure.
Beautiful, romantic, exciting, just like the first book in this series "The Sweetest Dark".
Shana Abe has become one of my favorite authors, her books never disappoint me.
This series is a must read, written with so much imagination you will feel as thought your the one shifting into a dragon, along with being loved by two beautiful boys, one a star and one a dragon.
Loved this book!
I have been reading Shana Abe for years. She is a wonderful author and I devour everything she writes. There are many great reviews for this book. I just wanted to give praise to all of Shana's books and her writing. The adult series is wonderful. I am going to go back and reread the series while waiting for the next book in this series. That would be my only complaint is having to wait for her new books.
Shanna Abe is an extremely talented author, who makes romance novels worth reading (i.e. there's actual substance). However, I didn't feel that this novel was particularly worth reading, especially since some of the content was predictable. Then there were other parts which didn't make sense to the reader. The stars are supposed to be watching over the dragons, not interfere directly with fate (the part where Lora changes Armand's destiny by making a promise to the stars). What? And then, for the better part of the novel, Jess is not able to communicate with Lora as he is able to do with Armand. But towards the end of the book, suddenly, voila (!), he speaks to Lora and she hears him. Also, why did Jess instruct Lora to love Armand? This just feels very wrong. Finally, Shanna Abe is clearly thinking of a 3rd book, since we now have Armand AND Aubrey to compete for Lora. And then probably a neat ending with Aubrey/Armand finding a mate in one of the dragons that Armand saw in this book. The anticipation of this coming 3rd book just falls flat. As for this 2nd book? Not worth $10.99 on kindle for sure.
There is something about the this series that draws you in. It is romantic, so if you don't like romance then you might not like it. I'm not normally a romance book reader but I still enjoyed it.
If I could give it a 4.5 rating I would. It's not getting 5 starts because it's not perfect and because there are certain plot elements that make me sad.
I read this book all in one sitting, today. And I started and finished the first book in the series yesterday.
I really liked reading this book and cannot wait until the next one comes out.
I think it is much better than most other YA books that are in the same category.
Once again Shana Abe shone in this second installment of Lora Jones' tale. I was swept up in it from the get go and was awed by her ability to write in such a way that's not only believable, but she convinced me that I was right there along with Lora and Armand. I could feel the rush of the wind around Lora's dragon wings, the wet sticky chill of the thick clouds, and I suffocated along with her when she fell down into the water.
I also loved that Lora & Armand's relationship develop gradually. Armand is a goner, that's obvious and he doesn't even try to hide it. But Lora's feelings are more complex and they are aptly and beautifully described.
My only complain is that I found out about this series now, instead of after they are all published. Now I have to wait impatiently for the next installment. Ugh!
