Desires of the Dead A Body Finder Novel Kimberly Derting Books
This series has been one of my favorite. It is also one of the most stolen series in my classroom. I don’t know if they are keeping them, passing them on and they never return or what. I have bought this entire series twice just this year. Desires of the Dead is the second book in the Body Finder series. Violet has always been able to locate dead bodies. That doesn’t mean she can go into a graveyard blind folded and point them out. I’m talking about those bodies that have been disposed of. Her family has been very supportive as has her boyfriend Jay. This “gift” has been passed down in her family. Unfortunately, in this book she has two people after her, the FBI and a creepy stalker. We see her relationship with Jay build, we meet new characters, Rafe and others. We see the toll this “gift” take on her and her relationships. This is a series I would definitely recommend to more mature readers. On my shelves this one required parental permission because of some of the content and the fact I was teaching 6th graders. I definitely recommend this book.Tags : Amazon.com: Desires of the Dead: A Body Finder Novel (9780061779848): Kimberly Derting: Books,Kimberly Derting,Desires of the Dead: A Body Finder Novel,HarperCollins,0061779849,Horror,Mysteries & Detective Stories,Social Themes - General,Murder;Fiction.,Psychic ability;Fiction.,Psychic ability;Juvenile fiction.,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Fiction,Fiction-Mystery & Detective,Horror Ghost Stories (Young Adult),JUVENILE,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile Grades 10-12 Ages 15+,Monograph Series, any,Murder,Mysteries (Young Adult),Psychic ability,TEEN'S FICTION HORROR & GHOST STORIES,TEEN'S FICTION MYSTERY & DETECTIVE,United States,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Horror,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Mysteries & Detective Stories,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes General (see also headings under Family),Young Adult Fiction Romance Contemporary,Young Adult Fiction Social Themes Dating & Sex,Young Adult Fiction Thrillers & Suspense
Desires of the Dead A Body Finder Novel Kimberly Derting Books Reviews
I'm finding myself really loving Derting's way of writing. It's not over packed with information, the pacing is wonderful, and she writes characters and situations I can't help but be drawn into. Desires of the Dead is no different. After being introduced to Violet in The Body Finder, Desires takes the story a step further.
Desires of the Dead doesn't have the serial killer storyline of the first book, but there is just as much searching for Violet. She's trying to figure out how to deal with her abilities and keep the people she cares about safe. She doesn't know how much to share about herself with her family and with Jay. Things have changed now, and she sees how easily her ability can harm those she loves. On top of that, she's been contacted by someone connected to the FBI about her possible special abilities.
The relationship between Violet and Jay is interesting and real. It's so easy to see that they are friends who became more, but aren't quite sure how to handle this new part of their relationship. They don't want things to change in their friendship, but they want things to change in their romantic relationship. Part of the "normal" conflict in this book is Violet and Jay trying to figure them out and I enjoyed that. Derting didn't just write the perfect couple and pass it off as coming from their friendship. She's added in teen challenges that make the book feel like it could have been written about anyone in my own high school.
Not only are the "normal" parts of this book well written, the paranormal parts are, too. That can be a little difficult to find, sometimes. Either the normal aspects take over and the paranormal suffers, or the paranormal is fantastic while the relationships suffer. Derting has found a perfect balance between the two. The paranormal bleeds into the normal, but doesn't take control. Every once in a while, Derting throws in something that shakes up the normal and reminds you that there is a mystery behind every word. There isn't the serial killer, like in the first novel, but there is death and echoes. Violet has to figure out different deaths that put her in harms way.
Desires of the Dead is a fantastic follow-up to The Body Finder and sets things up for a wonderful series. It has a little bit of everything I love in a book and leaves me wanting more. I know there's much more to Violet's story and after finishing Desires of the Dead I can't wait to keep reading.
Desires of the Dead is the follow up to The Body Finder where Violet has the ability to find the dead if they are not properly laid to rest. She also sees a matching imprint on the killer which could make her extremely valuable if her gift is ever revealed. The only people who know about what Violet can do is her family, as it was passed through the women in her family, and also her best-friend-turned-boyfriend Jay. Jay learned about what Violet could do when they were kids and has always accepted who she is. There has been much swooning for Jay. When Violet finds an Echo, it seems to drain her of any energy until the body is put to rest. Jay is always by her side to keep her going but readers shouldn't get the impression that this makes Violet a fragile girl who needs to be saved; if anything, she doesn't run or hide from her gift.
On a regular outing with her friend, Violet finds an Echo calling to her and drawing her closer. Violet isn't able to do anything without her friend finding out, but that doesn't mean that she will stop. This particular Echo changes Violet's life in more ways than she could imagine. In helping, she attracts the attention of the FBI and realizes since Jay is now her boyfriend, she can't tell him everything as she did when they were best friends. Jay, as a boyfriend, wants to protect Violet and that might mean telling her parents about the dangerous situations she puts herself in; but Violet isn't ready to share everything with her parents.
With the FBI on her trail and Jay's overwhelming need to protect her, Violet also feels that she is being stalked. First, hang up calls and then, creepy gifts are left at her car and later, threatening letters. When she turns to Jay, she doesn't find the answers she needs and things get shaky. Violet is also dealing with the insecurities that come with dating a guy who every woman seems to want. I would like to include myself on that list! All the stress and secrets cause major problems for Jay and Violet. Kimberly writes scenes so beautifully that you can't help but to get emotionally invested in these characters. Jay, I heart you!
I love that Violet's family members see that she is going through a lot and give Violet the space to deal with it in her own way, but they are always close enough if she needs them. I can't remember reading a YA book with such emotionally-stable families. Desires of the Dead really has it all! There is plenty of stalker/ killer creepiness, and yet lots of love, kissing, sweetness, and of course the emotional stuff. Kimberly Derting is an amazing author and has quickly become one of my favorites. I can see myself re-reading both The Body Finder and Desires of the Dead over and over. I would recommend this book to everyone and I see movie potential all over these books.
