This was the first fantasy I've ever finished - and what a fantastic introduction to the genre! A really original story that kept me guessing and on my toes until the very last pages. The unexpected ending had me thinking about this book for days after finishing.Themes of life, death, love, and purpose were wound together beautifully and told through diverse characterisation. It was refreshing to read characters who were not written uniformly as white and heterosexual, where this diversity was also not focal point - these characters simply existed as themselves and the story carried on strongly regardless. The author also did a great job of writing both male and female identifying characters without relying on gendered stereotypes to inform "how" those characters should behave - all characters were unique and demonstrated various combinations of strength, vulnerability, love, and mourning.
The book's pace is good, and the overlapping of time and events between chapters/different characters' points of view created a structure with much depth. I felt like I knew so much of what was happening, but also so little given each plot twist that I hadn't seen coming! A fun and highly recommended read!

Only the Sky is Forever A Native American Fantasy edition by Sean Binkley Rachel Fillbeck Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
'Only the Sky is Forever' is a very enjoyable book. It reads like a meshing of an old folktale and some of the works by Neil Gaiman in that it deals with old beings that can change their shape, but also brings these close to the reader by giving them emotions, thoughts, and struggles.
The setting is beautifully described. While it is never clear where exactly this takes place, the Native American influence is evident. The story is given the sense of being in a pre-colonial North America, but is not limited to that setting and so could be applicable anywhere.
The author does a brilliant job in pacing this story. It never gets bogged down and none of the chapters or scenes are simply filler material. Each scene and chapter flows well into the next. Since the story is told from mainly 3 perspectives (there is a fourth that shows up once), sometimes the reader hears about what has happened somewhere from one character while another character in the next chapter has yet to experience that. This keeps the story moving and allows the reader to see different reactions, emotions, and thoughts regarding the same events.
Having read a lot of fantasy, this book did not fall into the trap of only adapting already existing tropes and painting a cliched veneer over the top. Instead, the characters, especially Iktome and Coyote, were fresh and the reader truly cares not only for their wellbeing but wants to see their hopes fulfilled. Nor does the story follow a predictable arch; right until the last chapter, there was a great balance between keeping the reader engaged and questioning what would happen, but also subtle preparation for the ending so it felt both fitting and hopeful.
Thank you for writing this book and sharing it with the world.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable read! I enjoyed the characters and setting, and found the plot twists delightful.
"Only the Sky is Forever" is an ecological parable presented in the form of (what feels like) a Native American legend. The story is a marvel, such that the longer you read, the better it gets! The author is particularly adept at pacing, and the story just keeps building. This 'legend' is engaging from the first chapter, but the real delight comes later as it takes unexpected twists and turns. The language, which in a different context might seem stilted in places, works here as it feels appropriate for a non-native English speaker narrating from a lengthy oral tradition. This is deliberate. The third-person narrator sometimes operates from within the point of view of alternating characters, thus the story is related in third-person limited narration. Some of the character names will be familiar to readers of Native American lore Coyote, Grandmother Spider, Eagle, etc. Other character names are entirely original. The tribal names are invented, but plausible, and the plot addresses ecological concerns in terms of myth and magic. Read it!
