Do you know how to make a working engine from soda cans? You do now! The Quick and Easy Stirling Engine book will show you every detail you need to know. There are no difficult secrets and no expensive parts to buy. With two soda cans and a few other materials you can build a running engine in just a few hours. The engine featured in this book was designed for use in educational settings. Consulting with several educators, this engine was designed so that it could be assembled with simple hand tools by most builders in about three hours. The parts list is simple and affordable. Simple hand tools are all that is required for assembling this engine.Once assembled, the engine will spin a flywheel when the bottom is heated and ice is placed on top. This is a hot air engine design, sometimes referred to as a Stirling Engine. The engine makes motion by exercising a temperature differential. The bottom half of the engine must be warmed to about 250 degrees F, and the top of the engine must be cooled with cold water or ice. When these conditions are present, the engine will spin between 100 and 200 rpm.The primary components of this engine are soda cans, copper wire, and an old CD. The adhesive that is used for construction is readily available at hardware stores. This engine is a fun project for students, home builders, hobbyists, and anyone who wants to learn how to make their own hot air engine from soda cans.

My son and I tried building this device twice, neither of which ever ran. He ended up using the devices as "sculptures" of Stirling engines for his school project... I am glad to hear the device described in this book worked for most - I would hate to think others suffered the way we did. For us, it was an exercise in pure frustration - literally hours and hours of trouble-shooting, to no avail. The book itself is reasonably well-written, though there are some holes in the instructions; photographs are somewhat helpful, but again, not complete (and in at least one case, misleading). I think if you are already familiar with the principles and design, these deficits may not be noticeable, but we had never built anything like this.Product details

Shows exactly how to make a stirling engine from a can and gives concept behind the design.
Simple project
Very cool. I am going to make this engine and run it on a coffee cup heating pad. Seems very straight forward and clear. Sterling motors, by the by, are incredibly efficient compared to most internal combustion motors.
With this book, I was able to build a working soda-can Stirling engine in half a day. Not much theory or explanation, but it's a great step-by-step guide, if that's what you're looking for.
I started building steam engines over fifty years ago from old bicycle pumps, what great fun! The really neat thing about the plans in this book, is that they tell you how to build simple Stirling Engines that run on hot air, and are much safer than steam for the novice. This is a great project book for the whole family, and will pry your kids away from their iPhones, iPads, and TV long enough to have fun learning about physics.
I read the book (instructions more accurately) a few times and then had my son read through it and then we walked through the steps and built it. It ran perfectly on the first go and ran for hours (so long as we kept changing the ice and draining the water).
I do not think my 10 year old could have built this on his own, but he read and understood the steps and was able to help with many of them.
This is a great way to learn about how stirling engines work.

As a chemistry teacher in the first cours of college, "thermodynamics" is included a subjet of study. The book was very useful because my students were motivated to build their own Stirling engine with recycled materials. It was a success and they got good marks or grades not only in their theoretical cours but also in their practical course (laboratory).
I will order the other book written by the same author for building different engines.
Congratulations and thanks to Mr. Jim R. Larsen !!
